Phobos is one of the twin asteroid-sized moons of the planet Mars. Mars is the Roman god of War, known as Ares in Greek mythology. Phobos and Deimos (the other moon of Mars) were Ares’ twin sons with the goddess Aphrodite, and both twins attended their father in his many battles.
You may have guessed from our word ‘phobia’ that Phobos is associated with fears and phobias. Mars in your birth chart can show what you are passionate about and what you get angry about – Phobos, always in the same sign as Mars, shows what you fear the most. Crucially, however, it can also show how you can best overcome those fears and phobias.
Phobos orbits very close to the surface of Mars – so close that it was hidden within the planet’s own glare, undiscovered by astronomers until the late 19th century. Its proximity to the planet marks it out as a doomed moon. Within the next 10 million years or so, Mars’ gravity will cause Phobos to crash into the planet, destroying it.
Symbolically, this reminds us that what we fear so much often also attracts us intently – it’s why so many of us end up in relationships which are not good for us or fascinated by things we should really leave well alone.
Astrologically, the position of Phobos in your chart can provide a guide as to how you can best handle those things which scare you, and how you can break free from the fear trap so that you, unlike Phobos, do not eventually crash and burn.
All hail Leo, the undisputed star of the zodiac! Your sign commands attention and adoration in equal measure, and you’ve grown happily accustomed to the limelight. But deep down, where Phobos inhabits your chart, you fear that your star won’t shine forever.
What if one day you don’t get the attention you feel you deserve? What if you are forgotten? What if you walk into a room and are ignored instead of feted? More than anything else in the world, it’s a lack of attention that you fear, and Phobos can manifest this as a very self-centered approach to life.
Because you can’t bear the thought of not being thought about and talked about, you do tend to sometimes create drama in your own life, where there’s no real need. Perhaps it’s time to stop living in your own little soap opera?
To escape from Phobos’ self-destructive fate, it’s essential that you practice humility and grace. Try to make a conscious effort to NOT be the center of attention, sometimes. Give someone else their turn in the limelight and do it with good will and genuine intent.
Make a promise to yourself that next time you interact with friends and family, it's not all about you. Be interested in other people’s stories and other people’s lives. We love your Leo stardust, and nobody wants you to ever lose that, but Phobos in Leo is here to teach you that sometimes, just occasionally, it doesn’t hurt to step into the shadows for a while.
